The Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge was created in 1952 and the Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1962. The two refuges were combined into the Alamosa-Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge Complex in 1979. Events include a Crane festival and a kid's fishing day. Birds: Loons, Grebes, Pelicans, Cormorants, Herons, Ibises, Swans, Geese, Ducks, Vultures, Hawks, Osprey, Falcons, Pheasants, Cranes, Rails, Plovers, Sandpipers, Avocets, Stilts, Phalaropes, Gulls, Terns, Doves, Owls, Nightjars, Swifts, Hummingbirds, Kingfishers, Woodpeckers, Flycatchers, Larks, Swallows, Magpies, Crows, Chickadees, Nuthatches, Wrens, Trashers, Thrushes, Kinglets, Pipits, Shrikes, Starlings, Vireos, Warblers, Weaver Finch, Blackbirds, Orioles, Tanagers, Finches.
