Details: The San Luis Valley is 7800 feet above sea level and extends over 100 miles by 50 miles. The Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge was created in 1952 and the Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1962. The two refuges were combined into the Alamosa-Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge Complex in 1979. Events include a Crane festival and a kid's fishing day.

Birds: Loons, Grebes, Pelicans, Cormorants, Herons, Ibises, Swans, Geese, Ducks, Vultures, Hawks, Osprey, Falcons, Pheasants, Cranes, Rails, Plovers, Sandpipers, Avocets, Stilts, Phalaropes, Gulls, Terns, Doves, Owls, Nightjars, Swifts, Hummingbirds, Kingfishers, Woodpeckers, Flycatchers, Larks, Swallows, Magpies, Crows, Chickadees, Nuthatches, Wrens, Trashers, Thrushes, Kinglets, Pipits, Shrikes, Starlings, Vireos, Warblers, Weaver Finch, Blackbirds, Orioles, Tanagers, Finches.
