Sims Pond Biological ReserveSponsored AdsSims Pond Biological Reserve (email) (website) NW corner of Loynes and Pacific Coast Highway, Long Beach, CA 90803 Details: Originally a salt-water marsh fed by sea water, Sims Pond Biological Reserve is now a fresh-water marsh and seasonal pond fed by a urban run-off from a local golf course. Since Southern California is part of the Pacific Flyway, migratory birds use Sims Pond as rest stop. At Sims Pond you will find various species of ducks and egrets, as well as catfish and mosquito fish. The mosquito fish keep the mosquito population in check by eating the mosquito larvae. Willow trees and native plants surround the pond providing shelter for the pond's inhabitants. Closed to the general public, tours and maintenance of Sims Pond is provided by the Los Cerritos Wetlands Stewards, Inc. Views into the pond are available from the sidewalk on both Pacific Coast Highway and Loynes Drive. Birds: Red-Wing Blackbirds, Black-Crowned Night Herons, Ducks, Egrets. Note: Bird listings may include resident and migratory birds and common and rare sightings. |
